Monitoring submesoscale ocean processes with Earth observation data
Submesoscale ocean processes, such as fronts, filaments, and small eddies, are important drivers of ocean mixing and transport, but are difficult to observe using traditional in situ measurements alone. Satellite Earth observation data provide an effective way to monitor these features over appropriate spatial and temporal scales through measurements of sea surface temperature, ocean colour, sea surface height, and surface winds.
This training session will introduce participants to the Copernicus marine Earth observation products distributed by EUMETSAT, with a focus on those that can support the study of submesoscale processes. The session will provide an overview of relevant datasets from Sentinel-3, Sentinel-6 and related missions, as well as the services and platforms available for accessing and working with these data. Examples will demonstrate how different satellite products can be used together to identify and monitor submesoscale features in the ocean.
The 90-minute session will be delivered by the expert trainers from the EUMETSAT Copernicus Marine Training Service. It will consist of a short introduction to EUMETSAT’s marine Earth observation activities and available data products (10 minutes), followed by a practical demonstration of data access, visualisation, and analysis workflows (60 minutes). The session will conclude with a 20-minute Q&A and discussion period. Each participant will work on their own laptop, and the training is available both for online and onsite people. Interested participants of all levels of expertise are welcome!
